Reece Morgan had always planned to return home and help run the family ranch after college, but after a difference of opinion with his father, he decides to accept a job in town. He’s settling in well to his new occupation as a sheriff’s deputy when the troubled granddaughter of the Bluecreek Ranch’s foreman comes to visit the ranch. Suddenly, Reece’s focus changes and his heart is drawn back to his family and the ranching business he loves. However, the young woman, Clara Callahan, makes it known from the start that she doesn’t have the same faith in a loving God that he does. Praying some time apart will dim his feelings for her, Reece once again leaves the ranch for the big city. Will the two of them find a way to make their stormy relationship work, or will the differences between them be too large a hurdle to overcome? “Clara’s Heart” takes place in the years 1938-1939, and continues the story of the ancestors of FBI Agent, Samuel Clemens Morgan, from the TRUE COVER SERIES by Ruth Kyser.

What’s in a name?

What’s in a name?

Over the years I’ve had many people ask me where I get the titles for my Christian novels.

The answer to that question varies.

Most of the time I already know what the name of the book is going to be before I write it.  Every once in a while I really struggle to come up with just the right name.  I want to draw people in so they will read the book, maybe even give them a hint of what the book is about, and yet not give it all away.  And for whatever reason, I prefer book titles that are shorter—only two or three words, if possible.

I had a tough time coming up with the title for my Contemporary Christian novel, Endless SeasonNone of the possible names I came up with seemed to fit what I felt to be the heart of the book.  Finally, after re-reading it (for what felt like the hundredth time), I settled on that title, using something said by Jerrold—a pastor friend of one of the main characters.  Jerrold says that God’s love isn’t just for one time…not just for a season…but is endless, eternal and enduring.

And as soon as I read that sentence, I knew I’d found the title.

The title for True Cover actually came from a scripture I used within the book:  Psalm 61:4 “…I will trust in the cover of thy wings…”

The Whispering Sentinel was a story about a huge Norway pine that stood as a symbol of freedom, and a sign for those looking to find it.  Well, the storyline wasn’t entirely about the tree, you understand.  But the tree played a significant role in the heroine’s search for her past and her future.  So it seemed only right that it be used in the title too.

My latest three Christian Historical novels—all part of a three-book series—were named after the women who were ancestors of Sam Morgan—my hero in the True Cover series.  Mattie’s Heart was named after his great-grandmother, Clara’s Heart, named after his grandmother, and Laurie’s Heart was about his mother.  So it seemed only fitting that their names be first and forefront in the titles.

The Healing Hills was a no-brainer—named after the hills/mountains that gave my heroine such comfort and peace.

So now you know a little about how some of the titles to my novels came to be.  Just a glimpse into the mind of an author.

God bless—and stay tuned for more in the future.

Independence Day

Independence Day

When I was growing up, this holiday we now call ‘4th of July’ was almost always referred to as ‘Independence Day’.

That is because it was created initially as a day to celebrate our freedom from the British Monarchy.  July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, although the tradition of celebrating Independence Day goes back much further than that.

My book, The Dove and The Raven takes place during the latter years of the American Revolutionary War–that time in our country’s history when we were battling for our freedom to be in independent nation.  I have ancestors who fought in that war, and I think of them every time this holiday rolls around.  I’m sure they’d be distressed to see how so many folks in our country are unappreciative of the freedoms they fought so diligently to obtain.

If you are interested in reading a Christian Historical novel (with a little romance thrown in), but sure to stop over to either Amazon or Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy of The Dove and The Raven.  It’s perfect reading for this holiday weekend!

And it doesn’t matter whether you call it ‘4th of July’ or ‘Independence Day’ — either way, I hope you have a safe and happy holiday with your family!

Saying goodbye to ‘family’ . . . .

Saying goodbye to ‘family’ . . . .

I just realized something.  The Christian novel I recently published was my 10TH NOVEL!

Somehow that doesn’t seem possible.

Then I started checking.  It was back in November of 2011 when I published my first novel, a Christian American Revolutionary War Romance novel named, THE DOVE AND THE RAVEN.

Who knew there would be nine more books on the horizon?

The amazing part is that six of those ten books have been about one family – The Morgans.  What started out three years ago as a single, stand-alone book when I wrote TRUE COVER, quickly grew into two three-book series.  At the request of my readers (there were many emails, Facebook posts, and pouty lips), I wrote two more books in that series that continued to tell the story of FBI Agent, Sam Morgan – BLUECREEK RANCH, and SECOND CHANCES.

I thought I was finished with the Morgan family, but something happened to change my mind.  While I was writing SECOND CHANCES, the final book in the TRUE COVER series, I created a family tree for Sam—going back to his great-grandparents.  I suddenly realized one day that I had the makings of a second three-book series—this one based on Sam’s ancestors.

And that is how THE MORGAN FAMILY SAGA series came to be.  Book 1 in the series, MATTIE’S HEART, tells the story of Brady and Mattie Morgan, Sam’s great-grandparents, and the founders of Bluecreek Ranch.  Book 2, CLARA’S HEART, tells the story of Reece and Clara Morgan, Sam’s grandparents, and Book 3, LAURIE’S HEART, (which was just released) tells about how Clay and Laurie Morgan met and fell in love.  They are Sam’s parents, and brings the story of the Morgan Family full circle – back to the first book in the TRUE COVER series.

If you haven’t read any of these books, I encourage you to do so.  You’ll find adventure, danger, mystery, history, stubbornness, forgiveness, and a loyal love of God as each member of the family finds their way in the world.

It’s been a fun ride, telling the Morgans’ stories.  I’ve really enjoyed knowing these folk, and it’s going to be difficult to tell them goodbye as I move on to my next writing project.  It’s kind of like saying goodbye to family!  But they will always live on in my heart and mind–and of course, in my books!

God bless – and happy reading!

“Loved the book “Mattie’s Heart” (The Morgan Family Saga). Having read all the “True Cover” books this was exciting to see where it all began. Even if you haven’t read the “True Cover” series this would be a good one to start with.
I like the way the author told of the times of hardship they experienced. Not only living out west, but hardships with marriage , grief and personal life. These apply even today in our lives. I would highly recommend this book.”  — an Amazon reviewer

“I’m not usually one for this type of story, but I couldn’t wait to read this story of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the Morgan Family. The founders of the Blue Creek Ranch. I am a huge fan of the True Cover series and I really wanted to see how it all started. Mattie and Brady endured a lot of hardship and loss, but didn’t lose their faith. They realized that God was their Provider, Sustainer, Comforter, and their absolute everything.”  — a reviewer on Amazon

Research . . .

I love doing research for my books.

Reading books about the time period in which I’ll be writing is a must if I want my stories to be accurate and give my readers the feeling of actually ‘being there’.

Photos of the setting, time period, and what I envision my characters look like, also help me when I’m creating the story.  Most of the time I keep all this ‘research’ information to myself–at least until the book is finished and released.

Once the books are out there in the public eye, however, I want my readers to know and understand where my story comes from.  So having said that, here are a few photos I used when I was doing research for my most recent Christian Historical Romance, Mattie’s Heart — Book 1 in The Morgan Family Saga — available at Amazon.com.
